Abstract. From 1992 to the begining of 1995, we studied the distribution and populations of birds in Majes Valley,

southwest Perú. This valley is the continuation of Colca Valley and a typical river valley in the western Andes.

We surveyed 115 km from the mouth of the river to 900 m elevation, identifying 59 species over this altitudinal

gradient. We recorded 43 typical resident species of the coast, 9 Andean species that migrate to the coast, as well

as 4 Neartic and 3 Austral migrants. The temporal and spatial distribution of aquatic and migrant birds is discussed.

A new southward range extension was discovered for Mimus longicaudatus, and new data on the distribution

of Xenospingus concolor is presented. It was also observed that the ducks and rails vary their distribution according

to the cycle of rice cultivation in the valley.

Resumen. Desde 1992 hasta 1995 se han venido realizando estudios de inventario, distribuci6n y poblaciones de

aves silvestres en el valle de Majes, Sudoeste del Perú. Este valle es la continuaci6n del valle del Colca en Arequipa

y es un valle tipico de los ríos que derivan de la vertiente occidental de los Andes. Se recorrieron 115 km desde

la desembocadura del río hasta 900 m de altitud, encontrándose 59 especies en esta gradiente altitudinal. Aparte

de especies residentes tipicas de la costa (43) se encontraron especies andinas que migran a la costa (9), así como

algunas aves de origen neártico (4) y del sur de Sudamérica (3). Se discute la distribuci6n temporal y espacial de

las especies acuáticas y migratorias. Se constata una nueva extensi6n de rango de distribuci6n sur de Mimus longicaudatus

y nuevos datos de distribuci6n de Xenospingus concolor. Se observ6 que los rálidos y anátidos varían su

distribuci6n según los ciclos de cultivo del arroz en el valle. Accepted 13 September 1996.
